Challenge
Moondarra approached us in 2016 with 3 crucial goals: to create a better looking, shelf-ready product, to reduce processing cost, and to reduce reliance on human labour in the factory. The owner needed automated technology which could handle 1kg packs of soft cream cheese pouches in a high-hygiene and temperature-controlled environment.
We needed to ensure that the finished perforated boxes would look amazing on the shelf and that each one had ‘best before’ and batch coding information all integrated.
Solution
The solution drew on methods proven over RML’s 40 years in the business and an in-depth understanding of the plant parameters, units per day and consumables.
The infeed involves a flighted conveyor that works off two different servo motors and a 2 Axis Delta robot. This allows a continuous flow of infeed product with manageable intermittent handling to allow time to package the product. We had used the foundation machinery and automation technology before, and we customised it to meet the specific requirements of cream cheese packaging. Our engineers even helped to redesign the perforation lines and artwork.
The solution has proven so successful that the Moondarra owners have come back to RML for a second machine to handle 5 different products. We also supply this customer with long-term service and parts service.
